Happy Flowers for Summer

July 14th, 2010

The third most popular cut flower used in a florist is Gerbera, after Roses and Carnations because of its vibrant, striking colors.

Gerbera is a genus of the Sunflower, Daisy and Asters family, where both species resemble a round happy face, therefore making it the favorite flower for birthdays, graduations, get-well occasions, promise to deliver cheerfulness. This plant is widely grown in greenhouses for commercial use, though it is also a garden plant, the annual flower comes in all vibrant colors, with white or black centres. It is much larger than daisies and smaller than Sunflower, making it a good size for floral arranging.

There are more than 30 different species, originally grown in Africa ( also giving it another name called African Daisies ) South America and varies parts of Asia. Gerbera represents innocence and purity, just like white roses. While roses are elegant, Gerberas are cheery.

Gerbera are normally 12 inches long, with overlapping rows of petals in each stem. Unfortunately, the stems weakens after a few days, so florists thought of putting a drinking straw along the stem to hold it up.  Seeds are also a gardener’s favorite since it grow so easily, long as they are germinated in pots with drainage on the bottom. The flowering plant needs to be water thoroughly, applying sufficient amount of water, but not excessively, the drainage hole will prevent root-rotting from over-watering. Small pots are ideal if you do not want the flower to grow too tall.

Terra Plants & Flowers offers Gerbera year round,  we can make a huge varieties of designs using Gerberas. Spring flowers like Iris, Tulips, Freesias compliment the Gerberas very well. So, surprise someone today with a bouquet of Gerberas - the happiest flower on earth!

Florists are often asked this question – How does a flower bouquet arrive at my doorstep?

They go through a journey from either a seed or plant, grown in greenhouses ( flowers sold in florists are always from greenhouses as opposed to field-grown) under superb temperature control, watering, trimming and care. The maturing time depends on the type of flowers, then they are cut and immediately put in water to limit the shock. Growers will pack the flowers to the same length and bundle up for delivery to local floral wholesalers or the airport to be flown to other cities or country.

Flower business is a billion-dollar business worldwide. Any variety of flowers that cannot be grown locally can be flown in from other countries with warmer climate. Columbia, Brazil, New Zealand, Thailand, Holland, Denmark, California, Florida, Equador, Hawaii are just a few exporters of flowers. Over the years, Americans and Canadians have successfully grown tropical ( or most commonly called- Exotic) flowers  like Orchids, Anthuriums. But certain varieties of exotic flowers still need to be relied on other countries.

Flower growers also transport large shipment of flowers to local flower Auction Centre. Vancouver, has the second largest Auction, behind Holland. Every week millions of flowers and plants are sold through the auction, run by a sophisticated computer clock, with prices being set by demands. Vancouver is the main centre for flower purchase, distributors from all over Western Canada purchase flowers from auction and fly them to cities all over.

Terra Plants & Flowers get our supply directly from greenhouses and growers all over the world. We pick up our flowers from the airport, or auction, and it quickly arrives at our workshop, and our experienced designers will condition the flowers with luke warm water and floral preservatives. The stems have to be cut under water to give it good fresh drink as the stems naturally seals up after a period of time being out of water. That is why sometimes you will see a fresh stem of flowers looking wilted.

After a hour or so of conditioning, we will keep the flowers in our cooler, the temperature is set between 3 to 8 degrees. Whenever we take a stem of flower out of the bucket, we always recut the bottom inch to assure they get another fresh drink of water. After arranging them in either a bouquet, basket or vase, it is now ready to go enroute delivery, and arrive upon our customers doorstep.

Now that you know how delicate the journey for flower delivery is. sit back, enjoy, smell and appreciate the flowers!

Everyone knows an extraordinary Mom – whether it is a mother, sister, wife, mother-in-law, grandmother or a neighbor next door. Because many families live apart, some Moms do not get a big hug or hear “Happy Mother’s Day ” in person. That is why florists can help people show their appreciation by sending them flowers on this special day.

Post to Twitter Post to Facebook

Mother’s Day is a holiday that honors mothers, grand-mothers, motherhood in general, for the dedication they give. It is celebrated on various dates in different parts of the world, majority of them are on the second Sunday in May, including Canada, The United States of America, and most parts of Asia. Eastern Europe celebrate it on March 21, France, Sweden, Morocco celebrate Mother’s Day on the last Sunday of May. United Kingdom called it Mothering Sunday. While some countries changed it to International Women’s Day, so it is not just only for mothers.

Julia Ward Howe was a pacifist in United States, who first proclaim Mother’s Day in the year 1870. And in 1912, Anna Jarvis trademarked the “second Sunday in May” and “Mother’s Day” and created the “Mother’s Day International Association”.

During the 18th Century, children will pick wild flowers in the fields as gifts to their mothers. Poems, songs are created as tribute to them as well.

In modern days, flowers are still the most popular gift to mothers, and considered the busiest occasion for florists. Traditionally, bouquet of flowers for mothers are equivalent to a dozen red roses and chocolates for girl friends and wives on Valentine’s Day.  The only difference is that red is the color for Valentines, while pink is the color for Mother’s Day.

The flower that represent Mother’s day is carnation. Religious ceremonies hand out carnations to all the ladies. Florists promote wearing a red carnation if your mother is living, or a white one if she was deceased.

Mother’s day is such a huge event worldwide these days, that no matter what city or country, people would either buy a bouquet from a local florist or have it delivered to their Mother’s place of work or home. And it is so convenient to order online and have flowers sent anywhere with Terra Plants & Flowers. Floral baskets, flowering plants, gift baskets and arrangements of roses, tulips are just as popular  as carnations.

Deliveries in Canada can be done same day. So remember not just your mother but all the women who are important in your lives! As most florists will be sold out of flowers by the morning of Mother’s day, be sure to order early to avoid disappointments.

It is a day to recognize the hard work of secretaries and administrative assistants. Created by Harry Klemfuss, a New York publicist, to encourage people to seek careers in office jobs. It first started in the United States and spread to be an unofficial holiday worldwide. In 2000,the name was changed to Administrative Professionals’ Day which is celebrated throughout the whole week. Bosses show their appreciation by treating their assistants and secreataries to lunch, gifts and most popularly- flowers.

At Terra Plants and Flowers, we offer a lot of varieties of cut flower bouquets, which is the most welcomed-gifts to assistants. They are usually a compact selection of seasonal flowers, small enough to be set on a working station desk, alongside candies, chocolates etc. Our award winning florist is based in Vancouver,B.C. and have affiliates in all major cities like Toronto, Montreal, Calgary, Edmonton,Winnipeg, Ottawa, Victoria etc. in Canada.

Terra Plants and Flowers’ speedy service of same-day delivery within North America and huge inventory have gained a lot of customers world wide. Orders to Europe and Asia can normally be delivered overnight.

The newest trend in floral designs are small, compact arrangements filled with colorful flowers, either in glass cubes, small glass rose bowls, or pave designs in low ceramic containers. The showy large vase arrangements seems to be losing its popularity as most urban style living have limited room to display such a huge bouquet. So this works out great for secretaries on Administrative Professionals’ Day where space can be a problem. A chic, cool design is what customers are looking for.

So, don’t forget to express your appreciation to the assistants, secretaries and receptionists at your office on Administrative Professionals’ Day. They will certainly be delighted to receive a small token of thanks.
