The good thing about having lots of rain is that our flowers really love them!
Now that summer is officially here, the abundance of flowers are so pleasant to see around town, whether is home grown or nice arranged by gardeners in the city. There are perennial flowers that starting to reap from spring planting, like Roses, Irises and Peonies. Many beginner-gardeners love to grow them as they are easy to maintain. One of the most important tips is to make sure they have plenty of water as the summer heats up. It is critical as water needs to soak up the top part of the soil and also deeply into the ground.
The common error is that people like to spray flowers with their garden hose and just by looking at the blooms and leaves, there is a misconception that the water is enough, but barely any water gets into the soil by doing so. Once the blooms wilt, especially Hydrageas and Roses, it is hard for them to come back looking healthy.
Other than the types of flowers mentioned, there are others like Azalea, Begonia, Bellflowers, Larkspur, Lilies, Snapdragon Flowers, Delphiniums, Black Eyed Susan, Impatiens Flowers, Honeysuckle Vine etc. just to name a few.
Since the ‘natural look’ is very popular in floral design, our florist uses a lot of these flowers to incorporate into our bouquets and arrangements. Peonies are one of the most sorted flowers this time of the year, as the season is barely long enough for people to enjoy the huge, vivid blooms. It has become almost a ‘ Mother’s Day’ flower alongside Carnations.
